COUNTY FORMATION

Garrett County was formed in 01 Apr 1872, from the western portion of Allegany County. The area was originally a part of Prince George’s County. As new counties were formed, it became a part of Montgomery (1776), Washington (1776), Frederick (1748), and then Allegany County (1789).

The county was named in honor of John W. Garrett, who was the president of the B&O Railroad at that time.
